Episode 16: Psycho (1960)

Hey CrimsonPodders!

Last night we discussed the 1960 masterpiece “Psycho.” This groundbreaking film was dissected and after discussing the acting, cinematography, music, and story, we concluded the film was perfect, a 4/4 for both of us. Nothing else needed to be said, the film stands on its own as the film that launched the slasher subgenre!

We also shared a horrific story regarding the Jameson Family (as in, the Irish Whiskey) that you’ll want to hear to believe.

Join us next week as we discuss the 1985 film “Reanimator!”

Episode 15: Ghost Ship

Hey CrimsonPodders!

We took two weeks off due to unforseen circumstances, but we were back with a vengeance on Tuesday as we discussed 2002’s “Ghost Ship.” Travis and I both agreed the opening sequence was spectacular, but ultimately felt that more should have been done with the story, and more background given to the characters. It wasn’t the worst film we’ve watched, but it was far from a perfect film!

Blake’s wife Lisa popped in and recommended we discuss a film centered around mothers, being that Mother’s Day was just a few days ago. We settled on the original “Psycho,” so next Tuesday we talk about this legendary film from 1960, and how a boy’s best friend is always his mother!

Episode 14: Alien (1979) on Alien Day!

We celebrated “Alien Day” by discussing the first “Alien” film from 1979. We had a special guest, Blake’s wife Lisa, who wore a screen-accurate Ripley costume! We analyzed and discussed what we unanimously agreed was the film that created the genre known as sci-fi horror. We also gave the film our highest ratings based on what we saw as a nearly perfect storm.

Thank you to our listeners and to Blake’s wife for being such a good sport! Stay tuned for updates regarding next week!

Episode 13: The Fog (2005)

It was shitty movie night on CrimsonPod! Travis was feeling under the weather but pushed through as he managed to discuss the universally disliked movie “The Fog” from 2005 with Blake.

Blake had a little less hatred for the movie than Travis, but it was very well established that if you want to watch The Fog…stick to John Carpenter’s original from the 80’s. Speaking of, you can hear Travis and Vic discuss the original back in 2018 here: https://www.spreaker.com/user/filling_the_void/thefog1980

Speaking of the original, don’t forget to pop in “The Fog” from 1980 on April 21st because as the movie says…

“11:55, almost midnight. Enough time for one more story. One more story before 12:00, just to keep us warm. In five minutes, it will be the 21st of April. 100 years ago on the 21st of April, out in the waters around Spivey Point, a small clipper ship drew toward land. Suddenly, out of the night, the fog rolled in. For a moment, they could see nothing, not a foot in front of them.”

Join us next week for “Alien Day” on 4/26 (Acheron LV-426) as we go to space for the very first time to talk about the Ridley Scott classic “Alien” from 1979 and find out where we stand with regards to this legendary film! We will once again be doing another Facebook Live show!

Episode 12: Hannibal (2001)

The first few minutes of the show were hampered by technical difficulties, but we recovered! After our podcast hosting site decided to be problematic, we switched to Facebook Live to have the show, and it did not disappoint!

We discussed “Hannibal,” a noticeable absence of a primary character, recasting of roles, the underrated and often dismissed performance of Mason Verger by Gary Oldman, and the things we liked and disliked about the film. Several viewers of the episode joined in via the comment thread and it was great getting to read their comments and interact with them while the show was live.

Join us next week as we discuss the 2005 remake of “The Fog” and find out where we stand with regards to this film! We will be doing another Facebook Live show!

Episode 11: Cryptozoology with Dr. Mounce

This episode was nothing short of spectacular! Travis and I changed course and had noted author and cryptozoologist Dr. Tim Mounce as a guest on tonight’s show. He led the show with mesmerizing storytelling and a passion for all cryptids! Dr. Mounce shared a previously unheard story about a sighting of the creature, I spoke on the Loch Ness Monster and provided a historical backdrop as well as discussing some of the key sightings over the last several thousand years.

We also had a surprise guest towards the end when Joe Drew joined the call and discussed the Amityville haunting and phenomena.

We’ll be back next week to wrap up our Hannibal Lecter Retrospective with the 2001 film “Hannibal.” Join us as we discuss the film, differences from the book, the creepy Mason Verger and so much more!

Episode 10: The Silence of the Lambs

What a show last night! Travis and I had our first video podcast since the show began in January! We hadn’t seen each other in person since 2017–it was about time! We jumped right into the rundown on the Oscar-winning 1991 film “The Silence of the Lambs,” which was the first time filmgoers were introduced to Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lecter. We discussed the nuances of the film, pivotal scenes and sequences, and of course the incredible cast that brought this film to life! A film about cannibals, skin-suit wearing serial killers, and women’s empowerment and triumph in equality in the FBI, not to mention a scene we didn’t discuss…a bathtub with an unusual problem—the former owner literally became a part of it!

Tune in next week as we decide whether to continue with our Hannibal Lecter Retrospective or take a break and explore the world of cryptozoology!

Episode 9: Gangsters vs. Nazis with Author Michael Benson

Travis and I had the pleasure of talking with Michael Benson, acclaimed author of “Dark Roses: 13 Horrific True Stories” and “Gangsters vs. Nazis.” Michael discussed the conflict between Jewish gangsters and Nazis before and during World War II, and the real-life horrors that inspired “Dark Roses.”

You can preorder the book on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Gangsters-vs-Nazis-Mobsters-Battled/dp/0806541792

The second hour of the show focused on re-capping Michael’s discussion and plans for next week’s return to the Hannibal Lecter retrospective. Join us next Tuesday, we will be discussing the inimitable and legendary film “The Silence of the Lambs.”

Episode 8: Red Dragon (2002)

What a show last night! Travis and I discussed “Red Dragon” on its own and then compared it to its counterpart, “Manhunter.” We covered everything, from actors and actresses, sets, storytelling, to specific dialogue and everything in between. Travis turned heads when he lobbied in favor of Will Graham from “Manhunter,” while I vehemently supported the portrayal of Graham from “Red Dragon.” We both liked how Francis Dolarhyde was portrayed in both films, but I think his portrayal in “Red Dragon” is nothing short of incredible! We agreed on almost every other point in favor of “Red Dragon,” though there is still a special place in our hearts for “Manhunter.” After our detailed analysis, we came to the same conclusion, 3.5 out of 4!

We are taking a break from the Hannibal Lecter Retrospective next Tuesday; we will have a special guest on with us, prolific author Michael Benson, whose new book “Gangsters vs. Nazis,” will be released on April 26th. We will resume the retrospective March 29th when we cover the Oscar-winning 1991 film “Silence of the Lambs!”

Episode 7: Manhunter (1986)

Last night we discussed the 1986 film Manhunter, which has developed a cult following. This film was based on Thomas Harris’ 1981 novel “Red Dragon,” and was our on-screen introduction to the serial killer and cannibal Dr. Hannibal Lecter, as well as our introduction to several other key characters that appear in the subsequent films. After much discussion we decided that although this film is a product of its time, its importance to what would become a franchise cannot be understated. We discussed so much, from trivia and things we noticed in the film, to cinematography and casting. Even music that was used in the film made its way into our discussion! We both deemed it a solid film and one that Travis himself is going to put into a more regular rotation in his own viewing.

Join us next week as we continue our Hannibal Lecter Retrospective. We’ll be discussing 2002’s “Red Dragon.” This film shares many similarities with “Manhunter,” but also has several unique differences. We’ll discuss which film did it better and which film is closer to the novel. We’ll see you then!
