Episode 10: The Silence of the Lambs

What a show last night! Travis and I had our first video podcast since the show began in January! We hadn’t seen each other in person since 2017–it was about time! We jumped right into the rundown on the Oscar-winning 1991 film “The Silence of the Lambs,” which was the first time filmgoers were introduced to Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lecter. We discussed the nuances of the film, pivotal scenes and sequences, and of course the incredible cast that brought this film to life! A film about cannibals, skin-suit wearing serial killers, and women’s empowerment and triumph in equality in the FBI, not to mention a scene we didn’t discuss…a bathtub with an unusual problem—the former owner literally became a part of it!

Episode 9: Gangsters vs. Nazis with Author Michael Benson

Travis and I had the pleasure of talking with Michael Benson, acclaimed author of “Dark Roses: 13 Horrific True Stories” and “Gangsters vs. Nazis.” Michael discussed the conflict between Jewish gangsters and Nazis before and during World War II, and the real-life horrors that inspired “Dark Roses.”

Episode 8: Red Dragon (2002)

What a show last night! Travis and I discussed “Red Dragon” on its own and then compared it to its counterpart, “Manhunter.” We covered everything, from actors and actresses, sets, storytelling, to specific dialogue and everything in between. Travis turned heads when he lobbied in favor of Will Graham from “Manhunter,” while I vehemently supported the portrayal of Graham from “Red Dragon.” We both liked how Francis Dolarhyde was portrayed in both films, but I think his portrayal in “Red Dragon” is nothing short of incredible! We agreed on almost every other point in favor of “Red Dragon,” though there is still a special place in our hearts for “Manhunter.” After our detailed analysis, we came to the same conclusion, 3.5 out of 4!

We are taking a break from the Hannibal Lecter Retrospective next Tuesday; we will have a special guest on with us, prolific author Michael Benson, whose new book “Gangsters vs. Nazis,” will be released on April 26th. We will resume the retrospective March 29th when we cover the Oscar-winning 1991 film “Silence of the Lambs!”

Episode 7: Manhunter (1986)

Last night we discussed the 1986 film Manhunter, which has developed a cult following. This film was based on Thomas Harris’ 1981 novel “Red Dragon,” and was our on-screen introduction to the serial killer and cannibal Dr. Hannibal Lecter, as well as our introduction to several other key characters that appear in the subsequent films. After much discussion we decided that although this film is a product of its time, its importance to what would become a franchise cannot be understated. We discussed so much, from trivia and things we noticed in the film, to cinematography and casting. Even music that was used in the film made its way into our discussion! We both deemed it a solid film and one that Travis himself is going to put into a more regular rotation in his own viewing.

Join us next week as we continue our Hannibal Lecter Retrospective. We’ll be discussing 2002’s “Red Dragon.” This film shares many similarities with “Manhunter,” but also has several unique differences. We’ll discuss which film did it better and which film is closer to the novel. We’ll see you then!

Episode 6: Hannibal Rising

We took a dive into more movie monsters last night as we discussed the often-panned but delightful 2007 film “Hannibal Rising,” a prequel giving viewers a detailed look into the early life of Hannibal Lecter and how he became the serial killer and cannibal he was known to be in later years. We gave a detailed synopsis of the film and discussed things we noticed while viewing.

The general consensus was although the film was spectacularly shot and had some incredibly gory kills, it didn’t resonate the same way as the previous films in the series had with viewers. Join us next week as we view another entry in the “Hannibal the Cannibal” franchise.
